The Republic of Bulgaria lies on the Black Sea Coast in the heart of the Balkans, surrounded by Greece, Romania, Turkey, and the former Yugoslav Republics. Geography: The country is bordered by the tideless Black Sea on the east, Romania to the north, the former Yugoslavia to the west and Greece and Turkey to the south. The Theracian Plain extends through much of the country. The Danube Valley is fertile giving the country it wine producing capability.
International Airport: Sofia - The Sofia Airport (SOF) is about 5 miles from the city. Transit time is about 20 minutes. There is frequent scheduled bus service and usually an abundance of taxis.
Tipping: Tipping is just getting a foothold here but is still at the discretion of the individual. Check your restaurant bill to see if service is included. It probably will not. If not leave 10%. Porters should get loose change and taxi drivers should get 5% of the fare.
Shopping: Shops are open by 8:30 and remain open until 6 pm. Some will close for lunch. On Saturdays, Stores will be closed by 4 pm and will not reopen until Monday.
Food and Drink: Yogurt seems top be the national foot. No, is not the yogurt that you find in your local dairy case. It is from goats, sheep or of just about anything available that will give milk - but its good. Meat kebabs and spicy dishes with meat and vegetables are common and well prepared. Fruit is abundant so you can expect to see it at the table from breakfast to dinner. There is a plumb brandy called 'slivova' which is locally produced and is good. Beers are prolific as are soft drinks. Local varieties of soft drinks tend to be tutti frutti tasting. Wines are very god and are produced locally. Foreign wines are only available in the cities. Spirits are inexpensive including vodka which is found everywhere.
Social: Bulgarians know Russian but do not speak it. They know German and will try to use it. English is just coming into use more widely but do not expect to find many over 50 who have any idea what 'hello' means. In general, the people are friendly. Road signs are not in the Latin alphabet but Cryllic which will be a big problem if you are driving a car. Knowledge of Russian will be a big help.
Business: Business meetings are straight forward. It will be best if you have given them a chance to get to know about you and your company before meeting. Business meetings will frequently end up at lunch if things are going well. Business suits are necessary. Business cards are necessary and should have a Russian or Bulgarian translation on the back of the card. English is spoken by many business people who are younger.
Climate
The country is very warm in the summer months. Even in the higher altitudes it can be uncomfortable. The spring is usually very pleasant but damp. The fall is mild and dry. Winters can be very cold and damp. Best over all weather is usually along the Black Sea.
