Brunei Travel Guide
For such a small country, Brunei has a lot going for it. Perhaps it is really the oil, but Brunei has done well with it and the entire population has benefited from it in some way. The country's size and singular weather pattern do not make for a lot of choices, but the place does have its own charm and if you are in the neighborhood, one should stop and visit.

Geography: About a quarter of the country is given mostly to commercial efforts and oil fields. The tiny nation is in two parts - separated by a tongue of land belonging to Malaysia, which, with the exception of the South China Sea to the north, surrounds Brunei.

International Airport

Brunei - Brunei International Airport (BWN) - The airport is only 5 miles from the city. Bus services are every twenty minutes and taxis are available at the airport.

Tipping: 10% is customary

Shopping: Shops open at 9 in the morning and close at 6 pm. Shops close earlier on Saturday. All stores are closed on Sunday.

Food and Drink: Food in Brunei is a mixture of Chinese and Malay dishes. International cuisine is available in many restaurants. Alcoholic beverages are not for sale in this country. Soft drinks are plentiful. The water is very good.

Social: Social customs of the Malay Peninsula are part of the social makeup here in Brunei. There is even a government agency which helps the country preserve its customs and formalities. It is considered very impolite to point at someone. Smoking is tolerated but frowned upon. Prepare to take off you shoes and socks before entering a mosque.

Business: Appointments are best and should be made well ahead of time. Business cards are essential. Business people here are worldwise and often speak several languages. and are very well informed.

Money and Banks

Banking: BAnks are open from 9am to 3pm Monday through Friday and close at 11 am on Saturdays.

Currency: Brunei Dollar (B$)

Money Exchange: Banks are the best place to change currency. You get a slightly higher rates for travelers checks in US$ or UK Pounds.

Credit cards: Master Card, Visa, American Express and Diners Club.

Climate

There is heavy rainfall from September to January and is hot during the day and night year round.
