Snoozing on the sand between towering palms, paddling in one of two ocean-fed lap pools that melt into the sea, succumbing to an herbal facial: That's about as hectic as things get here on Bermuda's South Shore. Though Michael Douglas owns part of the property, there's nary a trace of starry gloss, fussy dress codes, or crazy nightlife—just laid-back days of snorkeling and tennis culminating in rum swizzles at the beachside bar and crusted Bermuda snapper with soba noodles at the restaurant. A total of 47 rooms overlook the resort's beach, but discerning couples choose one of the 13 white-slate-roofed cottages scattered throughout the property. (The private porches are hard to resist.) Most lodgings are serenely minimalist, with shrimp, periwinkle, lemon, and pistachio walls adding splashes of color to simple white wicker furniture; other recently redone bungalows sport a jaunty Bermuda-plantation look, with mahogany furniture, Indian-cotton plaids, and English florals. As you doze off to the sounds of tree frogs singing and waves splashing, you won't miss the bright lights or the big city one bit. Doubles from $400, cottages from $490, May through October; 800-468-6610 or arielsands.com. |
