Travel Essentials for Africa

Ever gone on holiday, reached into the backpack for that really useful item and found you’ve forgotten to pack it? Here’s your guide on what to take on an African adventure.

There is nothing worse than lugging around a load of junk while you are travelling. So before you pack take a good look at everything you’ve got and ask yourself “Do I really need things this?” Then again there are lots of things you should consider packing if you are planning a long trip overland through Africa. We have compiled a list of things you may want to consider.

  • A valid passport (don’t laugh, some people do forget) and an International Vaccination Card.
  • Foreign currency, travellers cheques, credit card.
  • Passport photos for visa extensions etc.
  • Photocopy of documents.
  • Backpack or Rucksack.
  • Sleeping bag, sleeping sheet and roll mat.
  • Mosquito net.
  • Torch: very important for toilet breaks on safari.
  • Padlocks: for backpacks, tent zip (combination locks recommended).
  • Clothes for both hot and cold climates, although it may be hot in the day some parts of Africa can get to below zero at night. Also remember there are Muslim areas in Africa and they don’t take to kindly to shorts, skirts and see through garments.
  • Swiss Army knife.
  • Sunglasses, sewing kit, towel, toothbrush, toilet paper (very important), toothpaste and shaving cream. Although most toiletries can be bought in major cities, things like tampons and contraceptives are not as easy to buy.
  • Water bottle.
  • Medical Kit: Panadol, Antihistamine, Antibiotics, Pepto-Bismol (stomach upsets), Rehydration mixture (for diarrhoea), antiseptic, Calomine lotion, bandages, band-aids, scissors, tweezers, insect repellent, sunscreen, lip balm, purification tablets, foot powder.
  • Film (different speeds) they can be very expensive in Africa, camera.
  • International drivers licence (if driving).
  • Camping gear (if camping).
  • Wet weather gear
  • Hiking boots.
  • Thongs (for showers) or water proof sandals.
  • Map.
  • Money pouch.
  • Sun hat.
  • Batteries.
  • Binoculars (for game viewing).
  • Swimmers.
  • Spare glasses (if you wear glasses or contacts).
  • Small wildlife book to help you identify some of those animals on safari.
