Munich Travelogue
TWA and Frequent Flyer miles delivered us to Munchen, for a revisit, on April 14th. Arriving early in the morning, we took a bus from the airport to the ever busy Munchen Hauptbahnhof [Main Train Station]. We then took a cab to the Hotel An der Oper and checked into room 221. This hotel was an excellent choice, especially the location, as it made walking to many places of interest a quick task. Some of the many places we visited were the Marienplatz, Hofbrauhaus, Altstadt Gate, Vikualienmarket, St. Peters, Baroque Palace, St. Kajetan, Odeonplatz, Neues Rathaus, Englisher Garten, the National Theather, Staatsoper, and Karntnerstrasse Pedestrine Mall.

At the Marienplatz, [pictured to the left] we were able to catch the famous Glockenspiel while both movements did their thing. The platz, although very large, was filled with people for the event as this occurs at 11:00am, but I don't think it happens at other times. Nearby is the open air market [Vikualienmarket] and beer garden, which is an interesting place to browse and people watch. We grabbed a quick lunch at a restaurant behind St. Peters and with a great view of the market and garden area. The concentration of picturesque sights, especially in this area, keeps your head turning.

Many of the great old buildings and the Munchen Old City gates were visited by walking throughout most of the old part of the city. We also ventured out to the Englisher Gardens, noted as the gathering/party place during the October Fest celebrations. The beer garden is actually in the corner of a very large and beautiful park that includes a running stream and other equally attractive sights. You can stroll for hours in this park and enjoy every step of the way. Being so large, it accommodates many and part of the park is usually occupied by nudist during the summer months.

Although we were very near the noted Hofbrauhaus, we found it to be more tourist oriented and perferred the atmosphere of other local beer halls that catered more to the regulars. These places serve as evening social gathering places for a large part of the population and if you're looking to find out about the culture, this is a good starting point. Local restaurants that seat everyone at long tables, are also useful in allowing for interesting conversations.

We interrupted our Munchen visit with a side trip to Austria and Hungary, but returned and checked in to room 224, same hotel. After another grand evening in Munchen and some relaxation, we prepared for the next day's flight home. We have been to Munchen previously, and since it is a favorite of Vern's, no doubt we shall return.
