Rhode Island Travel Guide
Rhode Island was founded in 1635 by Roger Williams who had been expelled from Salem Massachusetts for his unacceptable ideas. He supported such outlandish concepts as separation of church and state and actually paying the Indians for their land. This was too much for the Puritans who expelled him and would refer to William's haven as "Rogues Island." Known as the "Ocean State," it enjoys over 400 miles of lovely shoreline. Newport yachts, Block Island's quaintness and Providence's colonial atmosphere all add to the enjoyment that visitors can find in Rhode Island.

Capital: Providence

Population: 1,048,500

Area: 1, 545

Time: Eastern Time (US)

Geography: This tiny state is bordered by Massachusetts to the north and east and Connecticut to the west. The Atlantic Ocean makes is its southern neighbor. The state is hilly and has no mountains.

Rhode Island is part of New England in the northeastern corner of the United States. Known as the Ocean State, Rhode Island is a state with legendary mansions, pristine beaches and unspoiled scenic trails. This is complemented by an unhurried lifestyle.

There is always something interesting to do and see in Rhode Island, whatever your interest - from the usual recreational activities to whale watching! Although it is the smallest state in the US, it is one of the biggest in terms of the gifts to the country. It offers a unique blend of geographic, historic and cultural diversity, as well as a wide range of recreational activities. Despite its size, Rhode Island offers one of the nation's largest concentration of registered historic landmarks.

Most of the friendly Rhode Islanders are proud of their compact, non-conformist heritage - this region has always attracted a different, individualistic crowd.
