Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Custer and Crazy Horse have all made their mark on South Dakota. Today, four great heroes look out over the Black Hills and the Badlands that offer more than just a curiosity for tourists. The state is still home to a very large Indian population with the six Sioux reservations containing more Sioux than lived in the entire South Dakota area before the arrival of the White Man. It was the Sioux who gave the Unites States government its only defeat at the hands of an Indian nation in 1868. South Dakota is a fascinating state that has much for the visitor to experience.
