exit row seating

i recently boarded a nearly empty nw flight and chose an open exit row window seat rather than disturbing the passenger occupying the aisle seat in my row. no gate agent or flight attendant queried me about my willingness or ability to perform the duties potentially required of a passenger sitting there.

was i in violation of any faa or other regs for sitting in an exit row seat without being assigned to it? was the airline in violation for not asking me any questions? are airlines required to seat passengers in the exit rows, or can planes fly with them empty?

chipshot - nwa has a special safety card in the seat pocket of the exit row which essentially states in about 423 different languages the minimum requirements to be seated in an exit row. you are required to read that card, and you are informed as such during the safety announcements ("passengers seated in exit rows are requested to please.....").

a few months ago, i found it quite amusing that the nwa f/a on a dtw-ord flight chose to ask me and the chinese gentleman sitting across the aisle from me (who was a professor of linguistics as it turned out) if we spoke english as it was a requirement for exit row seating. she did not ask the same question of the caucasian lady seated in the exit row ahead of us. the professor was very upset about this and insisted that she ask the lady the same question. the f/a reluctantly complied, only to turn completely red faced since the woman was from eastern europe and spoke no english!
